This site is very awesome and I hope it lives! Short introduction of myself , I am Chi To 24 years young from San Jose, California and I love music plus food! My background is I am Vietnamese, Cambodian & Chinese. I play the guitar and haven't really explored many instruments. Although I have messed around with Ocarinas, Harmonicas, Bass which was easy since I can do lead guitar. I have always wanted to play a different instrument and I have chosen the Dizi and Xiao. The sound is lovely to my soul and ears and the Guzheng is also awesome which I won't own yet but I play with it on my iphone app. I have placed orders on my new flutes and I will post it up when it comes in and perhaps progress If i know how to do so. Hopefully me playing in my room won't annoy anyone! I also have Instagram- chitoz_89. Pleasure to meet everyone.

Welcome to the forum, Chi To. The D dizi is a good choice to start with, and the xiao is getting more popular. I appreciate the sound of the xiao more than dizi, although I have yet to convince my hands that the stretch is comfortable.
When you practice, there will be the temptation to play as quietly as possible in order not to annoy your family and neighbors. While I can understand that, it is important to learn to produce a strong and focused sound. This will not come from practicing quietly. I encourage you to find a teacher, something that might actually be possible in the Bay area.
Have fun! I hope to read more about your experiences and observations from learning to play dizi and xiao.
Best wishes,
David
