I'm just beginning to explore the xiao (northern and southern) and hope to find some recordings of fine musicianship. Any name of artists and/or cd titles to look for? Thanks!

Welcome to learning Xiao, which is now my favourite instrument. Have been learning for about 9 months now. One "must know" person is Master Zhang Weiliang (张维良), a well known teacher/performer who helped revive interest in Xiao performance. My learning textbook is produced by him. There's not much material online but here's a collection: youtu.be/WrFH9HDHTGcThe other famous performer is Master Chenyue (陈悦), she seems to have attracted many people to learn Xiao due to her recital of Trail of the Angels/Fairy Footsteps in Greenland(绿野仙踪): youtu.be/7vN5Hh2GLpU (MV style), youtu.be/oJRMnNekHqs (live on stage). From what I learnt, she uses Xiao custom made by Master Winson Liao. Another performer I follow is 騰雲の笛 (Master Xu Tengyun 許騰允): youtu.be/AjcZyUhEbSU (classic piece: Along the River During the Qingming Festival) Another genre of music is the Zen like duet of 古琴 (Guqin - 7 stringed zither) and 箫 (Xiao) youtu.be/T5tdS9ItQMMYou'll notice that many dizi (笛子) players also play the Xiao, so sometimes it's worth looking for music by dizi players. And if you look at the classical Chinese pieces for Xiao, you'll soon notice the songs often come from sung folk tunes or were written for the zither (古筝), erhu (二胡). Enjoy the journey.

Yes the book is in Chinese: 箫吹奏法. You can take a look here: www.360doc.cn/document/14203844_511814799.htmlXiao is not easy to pick up unlike other wind instruments due to its need for embouchre and breath regulation. If finding a teacher is difficult, you can try online sessions here: www.easonmusicschool.com/music-lessons/You'll need to enquire for Xiao as it's actually taught by their dizi teachers. My teacher is from there.
