What have been your negative thoughts?
My teacher always wants to teach these 2-3 mins long tunes that to me sound boring and crap.
I want to move on to other tunes but most dont seem to be Mei an. And if they are Mai an then she thinks are to hard.
This is the problem - no point learning a tune if i dont like it!!!!!

Looks like you'll have to stick with them until you get a more open teacher!

That's Qiu Ye Chang and Xia Xian You. (which I've also seen as Xie Xian You) The latter uses a wacky tuning. In fact Mei'an uses wacky tunings more than any other school.
Ask your teacher what her reasons are for wanting you to play only Mei'an pieces. Are those the only ones SHE can play, or does she think it's important for some other reason?

well she was tought by the mei an masters so she concentrates on mei an (she is writing her phd on mei an and the schools before that and how it evolved etc)
at the end of my last lesson she said if i really want to learn another piece give her some time to re-look into it again as she might to have not played it in a while.
Qiu Ye Chang - Autumn night is long Xie Xian you - roaming with immortals
CANT FIND EITHER ON CD! so annoying........

A good CD with all the Mei'an recordings is Chen Leiji's "Album of the Prunus Hermitage" plublished by OCORA (a French publication). You'll have to search for it yourself...

Hi, Yeah, the Prunus Hermitage is a nice CD, and pretty recent so it shouldn't be hard to find. Best, and keep playing, K.

Yes, that's right as far as I know. Further, Shittan Zhang is straightforward enough that, with the Prunus recording and the music from Prof. Lieberman's book you can pretty much figure it out, even without the qinpu. B. and k. p., K.

Yeah, syburn, that'll show her!
Actually, I think this is a fascinating topic for those of us who live in the 21st century while trying to learn a traditional art. How closely do you follow your teacher? I wonder how much of the reputed deference of earlier students was real, and, if so, how much was motivated by fear that the information would be withheld by the only available source. Now, we have a wide variety of resources to learn things for which past students were totally dependent on their teachers.

I do feel like recordings have done much more to shape my playing than my real-life teacher has. At this point I consider myself a disciple of Wu Wenguang, whom I've never met...

Well I hope my teacher can tell my disatisfaction with the available beginner intermediate tune choices for Mei An. All the tunes I want she tells me are not Mei An. I dont really care! I have already learnt a lot of tunes that i know i will never play again, so i dont want to waste time on tunes that i dont think are appealing.
