For some odd reason, it feels like I like the density of wood for the purpose of playing the xiao because it sounds very nice, mellow, and deep. But for the purpose of playing the dizi, it sounds too hard and harsh with the dimo.
On the other hand, bamboo sounds perfectly fine for a dizi, but sounds unfocused and raspy for a xiao. Is that just me?

Interesting, I feel exactly the opposite. With xiao, which has no dimo to modify the tone, I like to hear the original sound of bamboo. For dizi, I feel that it's not a big different in tone. Only the material is more stable and the tunning is more accurate. Who knows what is true?!

Interesting thoughts/experiences. I have never tried a wooden dizi or xiao before, but have tried a wooden shakuhachi. I found the tone to be lacking complexity (too pure). But that may have been more because of the straight bore than the material (true shaks have a tapered bore and jinashi shaks have a natural bore).
