Hey all:
I will be in the San Francisco Bay Area next week (Feb 6-9) on family business, and of course would like to get to some CHinese music stores. I know of BayMusic and Clarion. Isn't there one in the South Bay somewhere? Where else should I be looking?
Thanks,
Carlos

I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. There is an Exploring Music/Chinese Music Learning Center on 1608 S De Anza Blvd in San Jose. The website address on Saratoga Ave appears to be old and incorrect. The San Jose store had a few erhus, but nothing very impressive. They have CD and sheet music books though.
I was most impressed with the Chinese Arts & Music Center (Baymusic.net) at 500 Balboa near Golden Gate Park, at least for erhus and CDs. The SF location of Exploring Music is not far away from there, but I found it mostly a waste of time. They did have some sheet music books for erhu and other traditional instruments.
I did not check out the Melody of China Music Center (312A-25th Avenue, San Francisco 415-508-5799) when I was in SF last year. I don't know if they stock instuments or music, but it might be worth giving them a ring. The leader, Hong Wang plays erhu and they appear to have some good instruments on their website.
I heard gaohu players on the street in Chinatown last fall, but I don't know if this is the season for it.
Have fun!
Best wishes,
David

Thanks, Bird Man.
I saw that Melody of China was in the area, but the website didn't give the impression that they had a physical store. Looks like I'll be hitting them as well as Clarion and Bay Music.

Hello Carlos,
Please let me know if you find any really good bows. I need at least one and my usual source is not responding.
If you go to the store at 500 Balboa (Baymusic.net), I would be interested in your evaluation of the "cloud" head erhu, if they still have it.
Thanks.
Best wishes,
David
