Hello all,
I'm looking to buy online a vertical/end-blown bawu and would greatly appreciate any advice on who to buy from and what to buy. I'm clueless, having never seen a bawu. Sellers on Amazon include Interact China and Sound-of-Mountain. Sellers on Ebay include Redmusicshop and Herogreatzhang.
Interestingly, Herogreatzhang sells a plastic/resin vertical bawu. Anyone familiar with the bawus from Herogreatzhang?!
Prices from most of the various vendors are comparable, around US$80-$120.
Is an F vertical bawu much more of a finger stretch than the G?
I would welcome any information about online bawu vendors and the instruments themselves. Will I need to buy replacement reeds? Thanks very much!
Bill

Hi Bill,
I'm not sure why you would want a vertical bawu. I would choose a side blown bawu with easily changable reeds.
I have a bawu from Interactchina and the reed is covered by a fixed mouthpiece making reed change very difficult. I (actually now my teacher's) have a detachable rosewood bawu from Redmusicshop which makes reed change very easy.
Most sellers would include a couple of complimentary reeds, but if not they are cheaply priced. (see post on hulusi reeds).
From memory there is no finger stretch on a G side-blown bawu and the F is also easy to hold.

I plan to buy a vertical bawu, not a side-blown one, strictly due to personal preference. To me there's just something special about end-blown flutes. I love to play xiao but have no interest in the dizi.
The bawus you mention from InteractChina and Redmusicshop, are they end-blown? Would you recommend one vendor over the other in terms of product quality?

My guess is the vertical bawu is a fairly new invention and since I don't have one, can't comment on them. I do wonder though how many pros use them.
My teacher did the bawu solo for some movie soundtrack and he used my bawu.
The ability to change the reed easily, (without having to remove a glued on mouthpiece) is essential in my opinion. Moisture will shorten the life of the reed and I'm told at most they last around three years. The reed on my most used hulusi began to go after a year and a half.
Both Norman from InteractChina and Hongyueqi of Redmusicshop are honest and excellent vendors.

Thanks for the recommendations, Edcat7. I just received a vertical bawu from Hongyueqi, and I'm very pleased with the delivery time as well as the customer service.

Congratulations on your new bawu. Post a (comprehensive) review on RMshop's website, we'll all like to read it.

Can't comment on Redmusicshop.com's website, I bought the bawu through them on Ebay under their seller name Hongyueqi.

I too have bought Redmusicshop via eBay solely because I couldn't get my head around RMS's website and postage costs.
Then I contacted Hongyueqi directly; told him what I wanted and then asked for a paypal invoice.
I bought a few items which I haven't had the time to write a review on them.
A friend of mine is going through me to get a rather expensive ebony pipa.
