Just a little blog about the bawu.
My teacher is playing the G bawu for the soundtrack of a forth-coming movie.
He hasn't got one, so he's borrowing one of mine. I've got two G bawus, one from Interactchina and a really budget one from the now defunct Virtualvillage on eBay. Yes, he prefers the really cheapo one!
I think the bawu is a much overlooked instrument. It's easy to play, though I find the hulusi easier to hold on the higher notes.
Anyone considering learning the dizi by themselves would be less frustrated by starting on the bawu/hulusi.

Sorry, Ed, but I really don't agree with that. Because I didn't play a reed instrument before bawu, I find it quite difficult, especially to get the right lowest note. Breathing is also very different than with flutes. I rellay needed a lot of work before I startef playing little melodies properly. Therefore I don't understand why bawu has such a reputation to be an "easy" instrument. For me it wasn't. Have a nice day, Flolei.

Hi Flolei
I find the bawu/hulusi easy to play in that:
there are no embouchure problems, there is no note 4 and there is only one octave plus two
When the recording is done and dusted I'll have to copy the piano backing track. The bawu part looked fairly easy.
Best Wishes
Ed

Just my thoughts, but I tried a bawu, thought it sounded lovely and immediately decided that an octave and a bit is far too limiting of a range!

The challenge with the bawu and hulusi is to overcome the limitations of the instrument and play expressively. I don't have any links handy, but I have heard amazing performances on Youtube of bawu and hulusi that must have taken some work and musical sophistication.

David,
I would be very interested to hear your hulusi playing. Can you post a link sometime?
