Has anyone had any dealings with the Red Music Shop? There is a zhongruan there that has definitely caught my eye (see link). I am in the market for a new ruan between now and the beginning of the new year (if Christmas doesn’t strangle my wallet to death). The quality of the instrument appears quite good and would definitely be a great addition to my collection (I currently have two). Any thoughts or impressions would be greatly appreciated! www.redmusicshop.com/Ruan/Zhong%20Ruan/Professional%20rosewood%20Zhong%20Ruan,Chinese%20Zhong%20Ruan%20lute

As I type this, going into the website leads to blank pages on firefox, chrome, and internet explorer. One would have to go to the cached versions using google search. I can't comment on the ruan, but I can see certain users being perplexed at seeing different types of sandalwood dizis (and wondering what the alto-C pitch would sound like ). I'm also quite curious about the shipping cost given the delivery options . . . . . DHL, FedEx, and UPS ain't cheap. EMS I could imagine US$20 for something the size of a dizi.

I cancelled the gig for another Sunday. The particular ruan available at Red Music is attracting me no end. I could wait a little longer, like say Feb 2013 or there abouts but the "bug" is biting very deeply! I know you favor the SGN ruans, and they are fantastic instruments, but I would really love a backup instrument other than the sunburst ruan. As is, given how hard I play I'll probably have to replace the bone frets on the old ruan some time late next year. I'm seeing fret wear now, and may order new frets early next year so I'll have them when needed. Also, I had the idea of ordering a solid bone bridge! It would have to be specially cut, but I'm curious as to how that would affect the sound of the ruan. What do you think?

Shipping costs from overseas is a killer. I'd probably be looking at as much as $100.00, but hopefully it'll be lower. I plan to contact them to ask, as I saw nothing on the site about shipping fees. I think one of the reasons Ed is so for me getting an SGN ruan is the fact that if I spend that kind of money I might as well wait for a superior ruan. And I understand that and I think my next ruan will be a SGN. Hey, what can I say, I'm a collector.

Valdae It's a shame you've prosponed your gig, I would have loved to have seen your youtube clips. Solid bone bridge...hmmm. That would cost a lot, and the extra amount would be all you needed to a get a decentish SGN I had a quick look at my bridge, consisting of two types of wood. It reminds me of some types of erhu bridges. Perhaps as with erhu bridges, an ebony one may (or may not) give a deeper tone. Maple and even 'white wood' each has it's own characteristics I just plucked one of my zhongruan strings just now and I had forgotten how beautiful it sounds.
