Hi everybody. This solo is by far my favorite pipa solo. I've been looking almost everywhere online and while I've found many amazing performances of this piece, I still really want to find a recording for purchase and a video of Liu Dehai playing this himself. I wonder why nobody has posted this, does he not play this composition often? It was even used in an interview video of him on youtube so I'm sure it must exist. Can anyone light the path for me? That would be amazing.

Wow. I can't even find it online. I struggled to find anything (other than the Marco Polo equivalent tracks) in the Far East - his work was just all sold out, except the sheet music.
I have some of Liu Da Hai's favourite music scores, although they are way too complex for me to play at the moment. You could try the VCD format - I found some works by Lin Shi-Sheng and a number of other virtuoso female pipa players which is very helpful for analysing their fingering styles.
My guess is that we are very limited in the English language medium, so although Liu Da Hai is highly respected and probably one of our overall top 2 favourite pipa players, recorded materials in the western world is harder to come by.
If I could find the chinese for it, I'll hunt for it on CD/VCD next time I return..

There are several performances by Liu Dehai on Youtube, but not of the Swan. I can't seem to post the Chinese characters for Liu Dehai here so that they are legible, but you can harvest them from the notes for the Swan performance on Youtube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi4X-qCFGMkThis performance is not by Liu Dehai, but still smashing good. Best wishes, David
