Hi, everybody! Well, after our little conversation, I got the wish to improve my xun playing and worked on the famous piece Yangguansandie. The result is here: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=r7wUGjWTVGII know that it is often quite out of tune, but for now I'm not able to do it better. In the future I will try to improve my skills and record this piece again. Thank you to have remember me how it is nice to play this unusual ancient instrument! Best wishes, Flolei

Flolei, everytime you upload a tune I am in awe and humbled by your mastery of the instrument. Somehow you manage to convey the spirit of China as well. Excellent!

You're really to kind, Ed. I think that the problem with me is really here: how to get the Chinese way to play music. Now, I think I've found a kind of compromise between my old Western uses and Chinese ornementation, between Chinese old style, which can sound to me out of tune, and what is for my ears still acceptable. With time and constant listenning of Chinese masters I'm sure I will evolue and change. Therefore too I make these recordings. I already feel a difference between the first playing (Lin Daiyu's song) and this last one.
Anyway, thanks a lot for encouraging me!

Huh You're too modest. Even though you play the western flute, I still don't know how you do it. I'm having tuition but you're years ahead of me. Lin Daiyu, isn't she one of the main characters in 'Story of the Stone'?

Yes, it is! "The Story of the Stone", or "Dream of the red manson". This character is known as a weak, ill girl, unlucky in love, who burries the spring flowers which fall down from the trees. She asks herself, who will bury her when she dies. It is an original and tragic thema. The music is actually from a TV film which seems to have been very popular in China.

I've only got half-way through into book 2 of 'The Story of the Stone', (There are 5). One day I'll start all over again and finish it.

It looks nice, but it has only 6 + 2 holes. It means one note less than mine and two ones less than the 8 + 2 holes one I would like to get one day, maybe if I will once in life finally go to China!

If there are different number of holes for the xun then a fingering chart would be quite complicated. From memory the fingering chart supplied by David as above has for 6 holes.
Shanghai is quite cosmopolitian. There is a big demand for English teachers.

No, it isn't so complicated. The better and easiest in 7 + 2 (what I have), which is similair to dizi, but with three adding lowest notes (you get one with the 7th hole and 2 with blowing from different angles). 8 + 2 may be a little more challenging because you get one more note at the mittle of the scale, but in many scores you actually need to play this adding note. Therefore, I would really like to have a 8 + 2 holes xun once in the future.
What do you think about when you speak about Shanghai?

it came through the post today and it is a big step up from the budget ones on ebay. Using the fingering guide supplied by David, every note is playable, though at the higher notes the embrochure has to be moved around. It helps if you're used to blowing any kind of flute.

I've finally sucumbed to Jock's persistent advertising. I saw some good value xun tutorial books and wondered will any xun do. I have a 6+2 xun and have seen a good value 8+2 xun.

Only a few words with my opinion about this. The best is 8 + 2, but easiest for flutists are 6 + 2 or 7 + 2 (almost the same fingering). 6 + 2 actually has a small range, so 7 + 2 is the one I prefer. Best wishes, F.

I did some research into two English speaking Tabao agents. Whilst I would never buy an expensive "too good to be true" erhu from one of these sites; I see little harm in buying cheaper items such as books. If the book arrived safely I might try a xun etc.,

This way I bought 2 books and 3 flutes (2 dizis + 1 xiao). The both websites (buychina and yoybuy) are reliable. The only problem with the first one is the payment without Paypal.
For books I used normal Chinese post and got the first book after one month, the second one went back to China and they had to send it too me again with Swiss post. All together I waited 2 months, but the book arrived with Swiss post after 2 weeks.
For flutes I used DHL. It costed about 30 USD for each flute, but it came each time in 3 days.
Example of costs: one ebony low G dizi = 100 EUR (all together with DHL and 18 EUR customs fees). The flute is beautiful and has a very accurate and pure tone.
For xun I decided not to buy this way because the instrument is so fragile. I would be really sad if it would arrive broken.

Thanks Flo
Yoybuy no longer accepts Paypal - read between the lines of it statement. Also you need a PhD to understand it's shipping costs. However I found some very cheap gaohus, but I have no idea on the cost of postage.

Oh, sh... ! It seems that you're right! It means I was lucky to buy the flute one month ago, when they still accepted Paypal. Shipping price is quite clear. They have tabs with information. For example, one xun for UK is 329-415 CNY (zone 7, price for about half a kilo). So, between 32 and 42 GBP. It depends on the weight. Actually it shouldn't cost more than 32 GBP.

It's the 3 days secure shipping I used to make travel the flutes more safely. You can also use less than 10 GBP shipping with "classic" Chinese post. If I'm not wrong, you already used this way of shipping plenty of times (for your wooden C dizi, for example). But I have to bad nerves for this now. I don't like the instuments to travel very long, especially in winter and in the busy season. Therefore I gave the same money as you for all together, but the repartition of money between goods and shipment was not the same, that's all. I didn't pay less than with ebay sellers, but I got the best shipping method I ever used. For a beautiful C ebony dizi (this time I was lucky with the customs and didn't pay anything), I payed about 65 EUR and got it in 3 days. Anyway, Ed, you're right in a point: we already have enough (maybe even too much) good instruments. Now we must work very hard to make them give the best tone they can give!
