I found an interesting pipa which I couldn't say no to, and took it home with me! Came across the Danwei article sometime ago, maybe at the same time, Zhao Cong was proclaiming the pipa as the national instrument of China whilst doing her ridiculous pipa pop stuff instead of her spectacular traditional pipa playing (besides it's not - the national instrument of China is a Dizi or a Guzheng ) The English is rather difficult, although the scope of the article is interesting. I can't believe I bought a pipa!

Don't tell anyone Ed, otherwise they will think I'm a cheapskate! Actually, I didn't want to spend as much as I would on a flute, since I don't know how I will get on with the pipa (i.e. my motivation and determination is not as high as that for the guzheng). As Zhao Cong says, the pipa makes an interesting bewitching sound, sounding both ethnic and strange even to chinese ears (which ties into the premises of the article which Sanmenxia has linked): it is the instrument often depicted in kung fu movies wielded by the sorcerers and baddies. However not to be outdone, in Tsui Hark's awful (but fantastic in a B movie kind of way) 'The East is Red', Brigitte Lin plays the baddie terminator who slaughters people left right and centre, uses a guzheng in the closing scenes of the film before her disappearance over a mountain cliff.
