I'm curious and unfamiliar with the name of the lead Chinese wind instrument replacing the Cantonese Vocals in "Once upon a Time in China Main Theme Instrumental" it's one of my favourite movies since I was a kid, and I don't know the lead wind instrument in this video......the question has been bothering me, what is the name of that lead wind instrument?.......also can't really tell which instrument is which? Guqin? Dizi or Xiao? Hulusi? thank you www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8Jur3UxVcU

Are you referring to the irritating sharp nasal instrument? That's a suona. It's shaped like a trumpet, and blown like all hell has been let loose! Its used in weddings and funerals (buddhist) and also, the theme track to some of the legendary Hong Kong movies. 'Once upon a Time' annexed this trend - in fact, it probably predates the 1960's films which used it. I can't remember the name of the piece in classical music literature, but it goes something like 'General' Meng or somebody..... There is a forum post somewhere with a picture of all the images in another thread but I see the link to the original site is now broken.... So which one are you going to learn?

It also sounds like the suona to me, which is a double reed wind instrument and looks nothing like a trumpet!
I've heard that piece called Junjiang Ling (general's command). I don't know if it's modern composed piece, or if it's traditional.

Yes sir Xindi it's that irritating sharp nasal instrument, Wow Thank you Xindi and sanmenxia now I know what that mystery Chinese wind instrument is.......it's a Suona.I just want to know that mysterious instrument because it doesn't sound like the Chinese instruments that I know.......Thank you so that's what the instrument is called, At first thought it was an Erhu because I saw an Erhu version of the piece (Once upon a time in China theme) then I listened carefully and said it can't be an Erhu.......below is a beautiful video of Suona? I typed Suona and the instrument below sounds and looks like "the trumpet" as told by mr. Xindi. Wow ;D Thank you for helping me discover the mystery instrument I just want to know what makes that distinct sharp nasal sound.
