That's pretty cool, May. Are you planning to attend? I have a set of the DVDs of the Peony Pavilion, but have not managed to get through much. I have a lot of trouble with the vocal style and technique. I imagine though that a live production would be a thrill and a great way to get the ear accustomed to something so different.
Best wishes,
David

Hi David, Yes, I already bought my tickets! 7th row, center, for the Sunday show. I can't begin to reproduce any of the vocal sounds. However, I found that listening to it has affected the way I play erhu. I don't know how to decribe the Kun voice exactly, but it seems to transport me to a different time and space, perhaps in part due to the antiquity of it, and at the same time, it's curiously new to me. The way some notes are drawn out, and purposefully suspended really creates a mesmorizing and lingering feeling. I've never heard of the Kun operas until recently. Jing Qu yes, but not Kun. So, I'm really excited to see my first live Kun opera! I also know a few people playing music for the opera. I met them when I joined a Chinese music group about a month ago. Practicing with this group is really exciting for me because they are mostly professional musicians and many of the are music teachers too. I'm at the bottom of the list. Naturally, I'm quite lost in there at the moment, but having the greatest learning experience! Since you're familiar with the Peony Pavillion, I know you will really enjoy the show if you can make it. You're up in Oregon right? Anyway, I hear these are very famous performers, so defnitely worth a trip. I can send you more info if you like. Email me at may.mdz@gmail.com Hope you can make it! May That's pretty cool, May. I have tickets for the Nutcracker (ballet) in Portland on Dec 11, and I will be in big trouble with my wife and nine-year-old daughter if we miss that. My PP Kun experience will have to wait.
I am very happy for you, May, and look forward to reading all about the performance and your response to it.
Best wishes,
David

Hi David, Nope...you don't want to miss Nutcracker with your wife and daughter! If the Kun opera group comes again, I'll let you know. Have loads of fun watching Nutcracker! I've only seen it on TV, and I'm sure that's no comparison to watching it live. Happy Thanksgiving David!
