Since I finally get a decent paycheck to myself in the next week, I finally want to buy and erhu and get lessons from Philadelphia Chinatown. Living in this location, there is a *lot* of climate shifting throughout the year (I also play outdoors), and I'd rather not deal with the problems that presents to a real snakeskin erhu.
I don't see a whole lot of choices when it comes to erhu I can buy with a synthetic skin, however.
There are only three I can verify the existence of with only my English language knowledge. There is one right at Eason, another at georgegao.com, and www.hkco.org/old/eng/learning_inst_2_2_eng.asp is an article published earlier this year that makes reference to a model of erhu with a synthetic skin, HKCO1.
I am leaning towards the one from Eason as I know I will have insurance behind the purchase, having heard good things about their company. I've looked around and heard absolutely nothing on the quality on the instruments sold by georgegao.com, and the HKCO1 erhu mentioned in the linked article is apparently not something I can find information on in English.
I suppose I am worried about the entry-level quality of the Eason instrument. While it is something I can certainly afford and learn to play very soon, I am also concerned about how long the instrument itself will stay with me before I feel the need to seek something with a more professional sound and/or appearance. It's unfortunate that there isn't much to be found on "the very best artificial snakeskin erhu" or something like that.
