Hi, everyone, I just wanted to share that my son started attending our local Chinese Immersion Charter School last Wednesday. I may be learning, too, if I can get the schedule to work. His new name is Shi Xiang. Best to all, K.

Congratulations!
I think I'm a failure at reading chinese!
> His new name is Shi Xiang.
First tone, second tone? Or does that mean 'shi' as in the verb 'to be' and 'xiang' as in 'xiang gang', as in 'Fragrant Harbour' - thus 'Shi Xiang' = 'To be fragrant'?!
Are you learning simplified or traditional? I can't write simplified, although I find some traditional characters recognisable.

Hi, xindi, Thanks for asking! I think Shi Xiang is learning simplified; his teacher is from the PRC, and the school is somehow affiliated with the Confucian Institute program of the PR government. Though I love both Chinese and Japanese culture, I'm a native English speaker, and we speak English at home. Kyokuhon's just my online name.
I'm told the Shi is just an approximation of our family name, Stetson. I don't know the tone of Xiang, but I'm told it means "flying high."
His teacher and his tutor both say he's doing well!
Best, K.

That's really fantastic. I hope he really enjoys it and gets to speak Mandarin to keep it as a live language, rather than just school based!

Thanks, xindi. He doesn't get much chance outside of school, but there is a lot of mandarin conversation at the school. All of the 4th graders are pretty much fluent! Soon, K.
