Thanks. I read trhough your site many times to get everything in my head. It was very helpful. But I was wondering what is the other compartment with a screw. I heard its for putting water into. Do you need to put hot water in every time you play to heat the instrument? or just when it is cold. Also do you know where I could find some beginners sheetmusic for it? Thanks.

That compartment is used for putting hot water during winter (to heat up the reeds). What type of sheng are you using? I think I still have 2 new copies of sheng etude books (for 36-reed chromatic sheng). Let me know if you need it if not it might be sold to my students. Thank you.

I'm interested in learning the traditional 17 pipe sheng. Would I be right that they are not chromatic and come in different tunings, like the dizi?
Which one do they use in Kunqu or Jiangnan sizhu? AFAIK the most common key in both Kunqu and Jiangnan sizhu is D.

Besides playing D major, you can also play in G or C or even A with the D major Sheng. Currently, I got two new 28-reed D major Sheng(s) for sale but they are quite expensive. Range: a - f#3 (e1 - a2 is fully chromatic) Feel free to contact me if you need help in purchasing a Sheng.
