Hi, all, I guess this is mostly a question for David, but I thought I'd put it out there. A friend has asked me to accompany her telling of a traditional Vietnamese story, in English "The Crystal Heart". Here's a link: www.aaronshep.com/stories/050.html though not the version she's using. Does anyone know the song? She says some local Vietnamese people say it's famous, but are too shy to sing it for her. Any help appreciated. Best, and keep playing. K.

I assume the lyrics of this song are:
My love is like a blossom in the breeze. My love is like a moonbeam on the waves.
This doesn't ring any bells at the moment. What is the Vietnamese name for the song? If the song is indeed well-known, the local Vietnamese friends should be able to provide that. It would also help to know what part of Vietnam the song comes from. I know lots of tunes, but since I am an instrumentalist, I don't often know the lyrics.
Best wishes,
David

Although it may seem like a good idea to find the original melody for the lyrics in the story, you might find it effective to use another attractive melody. The Quan Ho tradition in the North is particularly accessible to non-Vietnamese. One very popular tune from this style is Qua Cau Gio Bay or The Wind on the Bridge. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCz5P6oPtiMwww.youtube.com/watch?v=5W76m1mJ5vYThere are many other performances of the same on Youtube. It works instrumentally as well. I played it on whistle long before I got any Vietnamese instruments. Here is another that I really like: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QwlRbVDtMMBest wishes, David

Thanks so much, David. I had a feeling you'd need the Vietnamese. I'll pass this along to my friend. Also, anything you know about dan sao technique, that differs from dizi and/or shinobue, would be helpful. Best, and keep playing, K.

In response to the original question, I have the following from my teacher:
>> The love story of Truong Chi, My Nuong is well known to Vietnamese people. However, I don't think that we have a traditional music for it. I think that a part of the story is a real story of somebody in the past and the rest is added to it for more romantic. The lyrics that you mention is written by Aaron Shepard. He composed for the retelling that posted on Chinese forum. Actually, Truong Chi played "Sao", not sang a song. Base on the folktales, many Vietnamese musicians composed different tunes. They are not traditional though. You can find a couple tunes in You Tube by typing "Chuyen tinh Truong Chi My Nuong, Yen Phuong" or "Chuyen Tinh Truong Chi". Those are tunes that I like. You also can find they perform the story in cai luong style. <<
Best wishes,
David
