I really want to learn to play the Pipa and expand my musical knowledge further. The thing is, I do not know where I can purchase a pipa. I have heard horrible stories of people in the West getting ripped off when buying Chinese instruments because they are not well made, for tourist, etc. So the main thing is I am worried about quality. The only place that I saw that sells Pipa's is Clarion music which is located in California. I saw this other website called Chinesecultureonline.com and they sell a variety of musical instruments, however, I am unsure of their quality. I have seen other sites though like Eason (Their prices seem reasonable). Anyone brought from them? I have found this site too www.shoppingchinanow.com/

I have purchased quite a number of high quality instruments, including a wonderful pipa, from Eason. They have a full range of instruments, from budget/beginner to master quality. I think that you can count on a fair representation regarding their instruments, and the price is also fair. They will help you to identify which of their instruments best fit your needs and budget.
If you are serious about pipa, then I would look for a teacher first. A good teacher will probably have a line on good instruments that are at least adequate for starting on.
Best wishes,
David

I agree with David. Clarion is a fine place, reputable, and Eason is also fine. You certainly wouldn't get ripped off from either place.
But find a teacher and he/she can help you get a decent instrument commensurate with your ability level and budget and needs for long-term study.
I see that you posted recently about finding a teacher in New York. If you're in the metro area I would be stunned to hear that you could not find a teacher there. Google for chines music lessons in New York and I'm sure you'll find someone to talk to. If they can't help you, you'll probably get 5 phone numbers right off the bat of potential teachers.
Good luck, Carlos

Note to all.
I want to sell my pipa cos frankly I do not play it anymore and it is gathering dust (literally) in my room. Plus, my commitment has become 100% guqin.
It is in good condition. The only flaw is that the tuning peg of the first (thickest) string slips and I have wedged a piece of tissue to stop this. I suppose you could get it fixed by a local luthier, etc. It comes with its bag and some extra strings, nails, etc.
I'm looking for £250-300. I don't want to send it through the post as it is heavy and bulky to say the least so anyone in the UK is welcome to it.
