I am quite intrigued by China's musical influence on nearby Asian regions. We all know she influenced many nations like Korea, Japan, Vietnam, etc. In Okinawa, there has been a revival of a style of music called Uzagaku (御座楽) it was music heard only inside the king's court. After years and years of dedicated research, this music has again seen the light of day (or should I say..heard ;D) For the first time in about 100 or so years, this music reached the ears of the public. Samples: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gid68xei4Y0 and www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAQ5Rb5tTcUMore information: www.wonder-okinawa.jp/014/en/1c-m/index7.html There are also very interesting videos there too! There are many instruments that are used, but with a particular Okinawan taste. This music sounds like Chinese classical music, but with an Okinawan twang to it. Some instruments resemble their Chinese counterparts, others..unseen before. I am very much interested in the influence of Chinese music in areas that are less often heard of. For instance, in the Amami region islands of Northern Okinawa, they play not only the Sanshin, but a koto like instrument resembling and sounds like the Guzheng. Only, the instrument is HELD vertically rather than laid down across on the floor. If anyone has information on areas that have been influenced by Chinese music that are less well known, please let me know. This stuff interests me. I hope you enjoyed!
