I leave in less than an hour for Seattle to join the Huong Viet Performing Arts Group in a program of traditional Vietnamese music and dance. The program is on Saturday July 21 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center, 15345 25th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155. It would be great to see any forum members local to the Seattle area!
A week later my own group, Tieng Hoai Huong, will present a different program, again of traditional Vietnamese music and dance on Saturday July 28, 6:30 - 9:00 pm at Portland Community College - Rock Creek, Building 3, 17705 NW Springville Road, Portland, Oregon 97229. We have several masters coming from near and far to assist us, including Kim Uyen, dan tranh, from Toronto, and Mitsuki Dazai, koto from Eugene, Oregon. I hope to see you there!
Best wishes,
David

Last Saturday (July 28) was the Portland program of the Tieng Hoai Huong Arts Group production of "Vietnamese Homeland Melodies". I was quite busy in this program, playing dan bau, dan nhi(erhu), and dan day, as well as being one of the organizers. The program was a lot of fun for both the performers and audience. This was our first program in Portland, so it was a bit of a learning experience. Hopefully the success of this one will help us get more resources and help for the next time. Photos from the program are available at the following link: www.vscso.org/Culture/VHM_2007In the photo below, I am the one on the left playing the dan day three-string lute. The performance is of the Ca Tru song "Hat Xam Hue Tinh." Best wishes, David

Thanks, Sung Wah. I don't have the video back yet from the videographer, and have no idea how long that will take. I want to listen first to decide what to post here or on youtube.com. With a live performance you are stuck with what happens, but it is a part of the whole experience and then only exists as a memory. With a recording, the good and bad is preserved out-of-context. We will see just what I am satisfied with enough to share.
Best wishes,
David

Thanks, dduc, and welcome to the forum. Our DVD is almost done, so I will hopefully get some clips ripped for sharing in the near future. We will also be selling the DVD to raise money for the next concert.
Best wishes,
David

Welcome to the forum, dunghit, and thanks for the comments. I love to meet someone who plays Vietnamese music.
It is a busy time for the music since it is the season for celebrating Tet. Last Saturday my teacher's group played at a library for Tet. We played Hue versions of Luu Thuy, Kim Tien, Xuan Phong & Long Ho. We had four dan tranhs, dan bau, and myself on sao. Then I played Thu Ca, the Vietnamese tango, on dan bau. That is not traditional of course, but it is a lot of fun. There was even a full band with drums, bass, guitar, and keyboard to back me up.
Is your school in Hanoi? I have more connections in Saigon, I suppose, Tieng Hat Que Huong and Nguyen Vinh Bao for example. I do know a few Hanoi musicians with the Central Tuong Theater from when they toured the USA. I have also exchanged some email with Pham Thi Hue, who is doing such wonderful work with Ca Tru. Anyway, I am glad to know you.
After Tet, I plan to return to dan tranh lessons. Until then, I seem to play everything but tranh.
Best wishes,
David
