I want one! But sadly, me, being American, would look quite strange in one of those.

Quite strange?
Go look at the video clip of my erhu performance. Now that's weird.

I felt funny at first performing in the Vietnamese ao dai costume, but the Vietnamese around here appear to like it. I wouldn't wear an ao dai around town, but it fits in when performing at Asian festivals.
Best wishes,
David

I have had experiences similar to David's -- I've worn my mian ao's while playing concerts and have received many compliments about them. I think that Asians enjoy Westerners who appreciate and respect the Asian cultures.
Regards, paul...

Oh look! hanfu.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8There is a great number of hanfu at ebay (listed under Tang dynasty costume, or what no). I want to find one of a Court Musician's Robes or Song Official's Robes like Song Huizong's one. Of course, the difficulty is getting the hat...

Here is a link to my Chinese music site: eaglelake1.org/chinesemusic.htmlIt's got a performance from 2004 in video and mp3s and a picture of our recent performance last week. I have more performance videos that are SOMEWHERE on the internet and I can't remember where I stashed them. Carlos

I made myself a fangjin (square cloth) or Chinese scholar's cap out of cotton velvet to mimic a Western mortarboard:

Of course not!
BTW, I'm in the process of purchasing a set of Hanfu from the Toronto Hanfu Restoration Association.

oh thats Han style clothes is it? That web site at the top is a bit hard to see anything. But the other site lower down has a rather snazzy dark robe with gray under-garment
What is the best for guqin playing?

Any can be good for guqin play! I suppose a good shenyi with a matching zhaoshan and fangjin will be appropriate. Yuan Jungping wears a nice scholar's outfit: www.newyorkqin.org/events/2006/event06_4.htmlI really want one to wear at home, yajis, Chinese New Year, formal gatherings, etc. I'm group buying with the guys from here: www.skycitygallery.com/hanfu/hanfutor.htmlTwo pages of good pics as well! I really like Hanfu. It is technically the Han Chinese national costume, so it should be allowed to be worn. It is our birth right; just the same that Japanese can wear kimono, Koreans can wear Hanbok and Indians can wear saris, etc. Plus, they are beautiful!

Syburn (or anyone else if applicable). Do you have a China bank account and a Paypal account? The reason I ask is because all the Hanfu stores have a restrictive transaction method making it impossible for foreigners like anyone who lives outside China to make any online purchases using an international credit card or otherwise.
The group buying process is getting slow and I'm getting rather impatient at waiting so it would be easier if I can get someone here to do the transaction process for me so I can save time and a few bob.
Any help appreciated.

No one?
Currently, the Hanfu group order may take up to 3 months... Bloody hell, that is just too long a wait and by the time I get it the summer school will have gone by!

So where is the best place to shop for a set of Hanfu in Beijing? I mean a shop that one can actually visit in person and look at the products, not an online shop...

you could ask the people in those guqin shops - they might know

Is there anybody in Taiwan who makes and sells Hanfu? There's a possibility that I go to Taiwan this coming week(end), which is why I am asking.
I think I saw somewhere in a forum that one needs to be wary when ordering Hanfu online as there are some suspicious tradespeople out there e.g. poor quality, wrong measurements, failure to meet deadline, etc.

There are definately some, but I wouldn't know. It is best to ask the Chinese Hanfu forums.

I think the above link doesn't exist anymore? I had wanted to buy one for busking during my retirement...in 20 years time. By then I should be pretty good musically. (I hope my teacher is still around then!) I wore my kung-fu garb for couple of performances in 2012 but I felt I looked more like a waiter. I can see more performances in the future. Not wanting to look like a waiter (we chefs have nothing against waiting staff, they merely plonk our creations onto the table) I'd like something like this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hmCp66Sadk&NR=1&feature=endscreenSome time in the past I found a website specialising in Hanfu, and the prices were very reasonable, but I can't find t now.
