Hope this doesn't sound too dumb.
How can one distinguish a Yun guzheng from a Dunhuang?
Are specific models made by one or the other?

It's hard. You merely have to trust the brand sticker on the guzheng if you don't get to touch and feel the sound before buying. If you get to test the sound, one thing you'll notice imeediately is Yun's has an overall even tone, while Dunhuang's has a rather unevenness(a few strings will sound louder than the others) from basic to professional models.
Basically, they have eaxct the same models, the same styles. For basic models with plywood backboard or paulownia backboard without signature engraving, the only difference is the brand sticker on the top. For higher professional models such as 694KK, 695 zitan and old rosewood lines, all Dunhuang brand guzhengs are engraved with "supervised by Xu Zhengao" signature, while the Yun brand guzhengs are engraved with the signature of who ever the specific maker is.

I beg to differ.
That was the PRE WTO Dunhuang problems.
After 2003, Dunhuang stepped up on its quality control to match up to international standards. Dunhuang worked on its designs, like sound blocks, eveness in tone, improved tuning pegs, better sound posts, the bone inset eyelets, and many other improvements. AND XU ZHEN GAO doesn't superviise the Dunhuang Guzhengs anymore. He only checks on a few better ones.
Yun doesn't mark out who the specific maker is either. Yun also ensures who ever attests the Guzheng too. Its actually the same company. Yun and Dunhuang. I can't say here why, but whoever's interested shoud ask me , and i'll tell him/her personally.
