I am a middle-aged white guy playing Asian music and often wear a Vietnamese traditional costume (Ao Dai), so yes I get my share of bewildered stares and interesting comments ("Nice dress!"). I rather enjoy the responses from Vietnamese who rightly realize that I am trying to honor the music and traditions.
Best wishes,
David

I enjoy the attention. As long as they are actually listening to the music and enjoying the visual presentation that I work so hard to orchestrate, that makes me very happy and content. A lot of how I dress (well you all can see that) is very fashion conscious and classy. That is my personal style. The instrument gets me a lot of attention. Sometimes I attract the right kinds of attention while other times I attract not so good attention.
For the most part people are really fascinated by the instrument and its sound and the way I play -- it seems so otherworldly to them and so alien. Especially where I am -- this city has no culture and ambition to seek out exotic cultures etc. Very red-neck and conservative in fact! So I'm super happy that I can give to those few who do seek out different cultures the presentation they are looking for.
I have a very personal and individually unique approach to playing the guzheng as it is. My fashion sense is also the same way I stand very firmly to wear what makes me most comfortable and what expresses me best. I dress only to please myself and I perform music that I llike to hear and enjoy to play. Everything else is up to the audience and I have no control over. It feels good when at the end of it all one or two people come up and express how much they really enjoyed my performance. That always touches my heart and justifies why I am a guzheng musician in my own right!
Play on,
Vi An.
