Hello all. I have a guzheng I bought in Xian in 1978 when I went to teach at the Foreign Languages Institute there. It is a "Blessing", made in Yingkou, and is different from any other guzheng I have seen. It has 21 strings, but it has a straight end (so all the strings are the same length), and on the other end it has a mechanism for changing the tuning. Both of these have caused me some difficulties. First, the standard higher strings that I have since bought in China are not long enough, so I have had to cannibalize old strings and join them to the new ones. Second, the mechanism for changing the tuning tends to rattle. Otherwise I love the instrument, which has a very beautiful tone and volume. Has anyone seen or got a similar guzheng? I'd be happy to communicate with you. Steve Nolan stephennolan1@hotmail.com

Welcome to our forum, Steve! I don't play the guzheng, but love the music. Hopefully other forum members will jump in with suggestions. If you are looking for a source for strings I can recommend some possibilities off-line.
Please feel free to contribute to our discussions on Chinese music and the guzheng. I look forward to reading your posts.
Best wishes,
David Dahl Portland, Oregon

I'd like to also welcome Steven to the forum! I am very curious now about your guzheng. You should see about getting some good photos of it for the group so we can better help you or atleast offer some suggestions. From my own observations, guzhengs with the straight end bridge has steel strings mainly? With regards to the "rattling", is that from the box which houses the tuning pegs? If it is the door itself you can easily fix this by first making sure the hinges are still firmly screwed in? Also if you go to any hardware store and pick up these small circular green fuzzy pads (used to stick under wooden objects so they don't scratch up surfaces), you can place one on either corner of there the door opens and closes (on the flat area instead of the vertical area). Someone help me out *laughs*. I'm terrible at describing with words! Hope this helps and all the best, Vi An.

Yes, photos will help. Plus, I've never heard of a guzheng with a straight end-bridge (which se's have).
