Hey, guys! On here to quickly ask a few questions about Dimo. I have some Dimo packs that are extremely ANCIENT and need to get some new packs, probably from Eason. Being one of the most troublesome aspects of learning Dizi, there is not much information out there about what the ideal characteristics of a good Dimo are. So, I wanted your thoughts on this. Of course, it might as well all come down to the way you apply it, but an interesting question nonetheless. Also, since the Dimo affects the tone of the Dizi so much, would it actually be a better choice to get a new dizi or a new, fresh Dimo? Even though, after lots of Self-discovery, I ended up focusing on Xiao rather than Dizi, I still love them both. The Dizi repertoire is so rich and has an amazing balance of light folk pieces and musical poetry, creating such a vast potential that is not found much in the Xiao. However, it is the tones that are completely different, almost like expressing two sides of music.

Hello hengdi,
The dimo membrane is a consumable for dizi. When I am actively playing dizi, I change it at least once per week. Membrane that is a year or newer works best. I find it less likely to tear and simply sounds better. I do have some membrane older than optimal that seems to work fine, but two years old is probably a stretch. It is best to order membrane from a vendor who sells a lot of membrane and dizi, so you avoid getting already old stock. I think that Eason Music qualifies for a good source.
Besides using good quality fresh membrane, installation is also very important. There are some good videos on Youtube and elsewhere showing how. I use erjiao for the glue, and it works very well for me.
Best wishes,
David
