Was the ornamental 「trill」 sound 「顫音」 imported from the western flute ?

I'm curious too, although I assume the Chinese di and xiao traditions are old enough to have discovered the trill before modern Western contact.

Probably you are right. Later, they just used the same trill sound symbol as the western flute to show the 「顫音」.
