Hey all:
You folks mostly know me as playing erhu. My initial interest in Chinese music came from when I lived in China 20 years ago, teaching English. Wow - that sounds like a long time ago! And in fact it was, when you compare the tremendous development that has happened since then!
At that time I studied pipa for about four months and brought a couple back with me. This felt like a very natural instrument to pick up because I was playing guitar and banjo already. When I returned to the states I got caught up with professional development and having a family.
Well, for fun I dug out my pipa tonight and tuned it up. My nails are in pretty healthy shape for guitar fingerpicking, and I could not only do some nice runs but also make some clean sounding lunzis. I've got scads of music, mostly hand-written by my teacher from 1986. Time Machine!
I'm going to see if I can brush up some of my pipa skills for our city's Chinese New Year festival!
Carlos
