I was lucky to run into a free performance in San Francisco of a group playing Guangdong Yinyue - gaohu, yangqin, ruan and violin. They were quite good, and it was a pleasure to hear experienced players play many standards of the genre.
I was amused by the ruan itself - it was NOT chromatically fretted but rather fretted the old gapped way, and it had a pickup and selector switches like an electric guitar!
Frankly it was a treat to hear old fashioned Chinese music.
