I am wondering why northern Xiao has a very long tail.
Does the extra long tail make better sound ?
Is it only ornament ?
My G-key NanXiao is only 55 cm.

longer ones are easier to make. shorter ones are harder to make, but cheap shorter ones could just be crappier quality.

I think is is different designs. The longer thin xiao can be more of a qinxiao, the shorter ones often are larger bore and louder...at least the ones I've seen and own.

I think I can understand that the shorter ones often are larger bore and louder.

I've seen both xiao and dizi with variations: one piece with extended tube length ("tail") 2 piece with extended tube length ("tail") - tunable, often listed as "plugable" in translation in the ads one piece without extended tube length ("tail") 2 piece without extended tube length and for xiao alone, 3 piece with extended tube length 1 piece with slight extended tube length and root bamboo end All versions can be made to play well, it depends on the skill of the maker.
