Hi all I just started learning how to play the dizi. I have no idea how to play notes on my D key dizi and the sound doesn't sound fluid. I am going to play a duet with the guzheng during Chinese new year, but I can't read Chinese music sheets(we are planning on playing the Myth OST, see you again, and rolling in the deep). Could someone teach me how to play the dizi and how to play these songs?

Hi Dokamei and welcome,
I listened to Myth OST on YT and you have a enormous challenge. Also are you sure you have to play it with a D dizi, my guess is it would sound better with a bass dizi. Do you have a teacher?
I've been playing hulusi/dizi and erhu for five years now and even I don't think I could do it alone.
Best of luck

Best of luck Ed I listened to the song again and I found out that what I'm really looking for is "Endless love/无尽的爱” which is a song in the Myth. I know that it can be played with a d key dizi: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdHNtDYcMlk, but I want to match the style and key of this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ekmep3eJak. Could you tell me what key this dizi is in? I just applied for some skype lessons with Eason Music but I know that I will probably need more help.

Do you have the jianpo (score) for this? Where are you?

Do you have the jianpo (score) for this? Where are you? Ed 简谱:http://www.zhaogepu.com/jianpu/10092.html. Do I have to buy a G key dizi now? I'm in the Monterey area.

Monterey, is that in Canada? Don't buy any more dizis (especially the low G as it has 7 finger holes) until I've tried the above score. Give me a couple of days.
Ed (London UK)
edit. Monterey is in California

I had my music lesson today and studied the score for the above tune. We also compared it to YT uploads. It's a lovely tune.
It's sung as a duet and the score can be played either solo or as a duet. The introduction is tricky for a novice dizi player and on YT is played with a guitar.
The actual dizi solo is suitable for novices but an understanding of basic music theory would help, eg, quavers, semi quavers etc.
As with all scores because there are parts which are repeated, it is condensed which may be confusing. There are parts which are repeated four times and you might like to shortened to two times.
I played the above with a D dizi and I'm told it can't be played in D key erhu; which has to be played in G.
Dokamei, you said you might take lessons with Eason but even before you attempt the tune there are things you have to be proficient at: breath control; playing on two octaves; timing; understanding basic jianpo, etc. To learn all that and three tunes to performance level by the Chinese new year starting at Ground 0 is an enormous challenge.
Best of luck
Ed
