Hi, there it's been a long time since I've been here. I have a 21 pipe sheng sitting at home and don't know what to do with it. I can't seem to find any instructional books, or videos, any pointer in the right direction would be well appreciated. I found some videos on youtube for maintenance and such but none on how to actually play it, at least none I understand. Thanks in advance!

Hi
The problem with getting such an obscure instrument is that there are few players and even less teachers outside of the Far East. I had the same problem when my liuqin teacher, the only one in the UK, decided to go back to Taiwan.
However if you are in the UK my erhu teacher knows of a professional sheng player. Eason has music tutors and it may be worth it asking SW for a few lessons via Skype to get you started.

Hi, Thanks I didn't know eason music had sheng tutors. But the only problem is I don't want to signup up for long classes as I might not like the way skype works with teaching lessons. I would rather try one and pay for that single lesson in case I am not up for a full course of lessons. I have never tried skype lessons before but am very tempted since there is nothing in Ireland! I have relatives in Leeds so am hoping to go over during the Summer but that would be more of a holiday... anyone have any experiences with online tuition?

After my liuqin teacher left I had a few Skype lessons off him. I had the basics so I guess it was difficult but not impossible. A lot of time was spent trying to see what and where his fingers were doing.
It's worth asking SW if that is your only chance of tuition.
