I keep my zhonguan on it's stand and I was wondering if the central heating would over time, dry the wood and make it brittle.
Does anyone use humidifiers for any instrument? Do they work?

You may want to consider a humidifier to be safe. I spent some time in Mississippi a year ago during the winter and made the mistake of playing outside. The cold dry air did a number on my ruan (small sunburst) and I had intonation problems for a while afterward. Here's a link that should help. www.maurysmusic.com/humidity___acoustic_guitarsI seldom leave my ruan on a stand, unless I'm in the process of playing or recording it, other than that I keep it in its case. I hope the link is helpful.

The wood on my sound-board, front and back seems to be made from balsa (but it isn't) and looks fragile. I asked my teacher if I should stain them but didn't get a satifactory answer.

I also heard guitar players use lemon oil for the finger-board

I think the front and back wood is composed of paulownia wood (native to Asia). Most ruans I've seen have the unfinished wood front and back. Higher grade ruans have a higher grade of this wood, which is quite beautiful but I can't tell if it is stained or not. Of course, one disadvantage of the unfinished wood is that it can suck up moisture like a sponge! When it rains a lot I can have trouble keeping it in tune.
Yes, many guitar players use lemon oil for the fingerboard. For the ruan, lol, from time to time I have to "dust" between the frets, as the stuff collects quickly in the corners of the frets.

Hello, A humidifier can be inserted into the guitar while you keep it in the case. A humidifier can keep the wooden base of the guitar moist so that it does not crack or warp too dramatically. Thanks Humidifiers

Thanks debid.
The zhongruan has a solid soundboard with no room to insert a humidifier. I'm reluctant to just leave the humidifier lying next to the zhongruan in it's case for fear of leaking.
I've bought ones of those digital clock/humidity guage and the humidity in my living room varies from 45-55% so I found out I don't need one anyway.
