I think one of the hardest things is to use the thumb to press 1-2-3 strings in smooth or conituous motion.
Its hard to locate the correct points on the thumb that will press say the 7th then 6th string with out lifting of your thumb.
Anyone have similiar problems?
Also mybe there is sweat on the qin surface cos the thumb often sticks on the wood as its supposed to slide up/down - very fustrating!

I use various points on my thumb; the whole area from thumb-tip to first knuckle is kind of a 'battlefield'. But the main contact points are near the root of the thumbnail and right on the joint of the first knuckle. Occasionally you can stop multiple strings with the area between nail root and tip. I agree that shifting between root and knuckle can be tough. Honestly, this kind of issue isn't easy to talk about on a forum--I think in-person demonstration would be better.

The surface of your qin might be too 'glossy' if you thumb sticks to the surface. Use a little bit of talc powder (do not use too much or it'll start squeaking!!!) on the edge of you thumb, would be a little bit smoother.
