For the first time after my motor scooter accident in January, I am finally getting back into playing with my teachers Chinese music ensemble. This evening I wil be playing at the Lan Su Chinese Garden with the Portland Orchids and Bamboo Ensemble. Usually I play various huqins, but this evening I will play dizi on a few tunes. Late last week the dizi player found he could not make it to the performance, so I agreed to substitute. My lip is a bit out-of-practice, so I hope it does not get too warn out and fail me on those high notes. The program this evening is sold-out, so I am hoping not to embarrass myself.
Best wishes,
David

Last Saturday (Aug 14) evening I played again at the Lan Su Chinese Garden with the Portland Orchids and Bamboo Ensemble for a wedding reception. I was in a little better shape for dizi and erhu than the July gig, and had more fun as a result.
I had a bit of trouble getting the membrane on my G dizi replaced after breaking the membrane during adjustment. In the 90 degree heat and wind, it proved to be a challenge to get enough glue and dampness on the dimo hole. Anyway, it is easier at home. <g> I am going to order another G dizi so that I will have two of each key at hand in case there is trouble with one.
I did have fun playing dizi. Fortunately, I alternated with erhu so that my flute chops had time to rest a bit. The D dizi does not give me much trouble, but the G dizi gives my embouchure more of a workout. Occasionally my erhu teacher or the guzheng player soloed, and that provided variety in the program.
Best wishes,
David

Thanks, SW. I listened to the recording of our gig, and it didn't turn out too badly. It was a little rough around the edges, but we were providing background music, so it didn't matter too much. I will shortly have the opportunity to practice the dizi exclusively, so I will have a chance to get our playlist more securely under my fingers. Sometimes the ensemble needs a dizi more than another erhu, so it would be good to be ready.
Best wishes,
David
