We saw a wonderful movie last night, from 1996. It was directed by Zhou Xiaowen, and stars Jiang Wen (who also made the stunning "Guizi Lai Le" AKA "Devils on the Doorstep") and Ge You. Jiang plays Ying Zheng, the first emperor of China, and Ge You's role is a musician, composer and guqin player, whose abilities become central to Ying's plan to unify all under Heaven.
Yes, I'm a sucker for flicks where musicians are central characters or (shudder) heroes. I think the music in the sound track for this particular movie is really well done and would be appreciated by anyone who cares about the qin. Be interested to know if others here have seen the work and have an opinion about it.

Dick:
I saw that movie years ago and love it. In fact, I've thought about it a lot since I have re-started studying Chinese a year ago and could not remember the name of it. Thank you!

Asked for it, and got it, for Christmas. Better than I remembered, especially now that I can somewhat enjoy it with the subtitles off! Great opening scene - all those huge bronze bells being tossed in the canyon.

Hi, all, I had my wife the librarian find it for me. Great movie. I wonder how accurately 2nd c. BCE culture was portrayed. No matter, though. Thanks for the tip! Best, K.

My Chinese music teacher tells me that Gao Jianli, the court musician in the film, didn't actually play the qin but instead played the "zhu," (’}), a rectangular zither that was plucked with a stick (maybe a similar technique to the komungo). There have been at least 2 other movies since "Qin Song" that show Gao playing a qin, "Hero" and "The Emperor's Shadow." Maybe partly this is because nobody the zhu anymore and it's not very clear exactly how it was played in the first place.

Oh, I tried putting a Chinese character in there but it didn't show up.
