That sounds like a great idea. Any recommendations for software? I use Fedora Core V 1 with Firefox. Thanks!

Fedora, hmm? Are you one of those subversive Linux types. <g>
I am afraid that I have only just figured out how to message with Microsoft Messenger. I can probably use a different Windows-based messenger. Will any of those play well with a Linux messenger?
Best wishes,
David

Oh David, I can tell you are toying with me! You know all too well (from the debate over jianpu / wuxianpu in the Flutes Forum) that I'm not only subversive, but obtuse, perverse, stubborn and ignorant as well. Since I'm not willing to pay Microsoft for wares to support my evil ways, I guess we can add "cheap" to my growing list of short-comings. (hey I need the money for flutes!)
Tell you what, for now it'll suffice for us to air (get it? - ha ha) our differences here in the various forums. If you ever get up Seattle way I'll stand you a pint or two and share some music, eh?
All the best in '05, -Dick

LOL! Well, Dick you have good taste as well, or you wouldn't be here. <g>
The microbrew ales in Seattle can't be as good as the ones in Portland, but I am willing to give them a chance. I don't know yet if I will be up for the Folklife Festival, but that might be a good opportunity to hook up. Let me know if you get to Portland.
Best wishes,
David

Folklife, now that could be good. Sometimes we travel at the end of May and are not here to take in the Festival, but this year we have no travel plans. There's a likelihood I'll be performing there. If it works out, and when I have details, I'll post a notice over on General Board.
It might not be hard to convince me about the superiority of Portland microbrews. In my experience, just about everything cultural in Portland is better than here. Alas, the same cannot be said for employment options. You can count on a warning next time we can manufacture an excuse to visit your beautiful City.

Hey Dick:
I'm an erhu player on the forum here, and havent' dropped in for several weeks. I see you live in Seattle. I'm in Spokane, and get to Seattle about four or five times a year - mostly for musical endeavors: recording, concerts, erhu lessons with Warren Chang, etc. This year I'm hosting a stage at Folklife, so I'll definitely be there.
Maybe the two of us and David could hook up sometime then, if you're in town. Normally for foiklife I bring my cittern (Irish music - celticnots.com ) but I'll bring my erhu and we can rock out.

Hey, Folklife is looking even better! I hope it works out that we can get together. I could even bring my Irish flute, although I am getting pretty rusty on the tunes. I would definitely like someone to take a look at my dan nhi's (Vietnamese versions of the erhu) and maybe give me a few pointers.
This year my usual Vietnamese group did not sign up for Folklife, so I don't have a scheduled gig. I am tempted to bring along my dan bau anyway and just play open mic at the CD room.
Best wishes,
David

Oh yeah, it would be a complete blast to hook up for some music, on or near the Folklife site. I work with two different (very different) ensembles that submitted apps to perform this year, so there is a good chance I will be in town during it. My house is less than ten minutes by car from Seattle Center.
The Festival schedule will be announced in February. If it turns out I'm on it, I'll post something in Announcements or Events. Which is better? Does it make a difference if it's not really Chinese (or even asian) music? Can anybody put stuff in the forum calendar?
Hey Carlos, I saw your postings about er hu at Eagle Lake, but apparently that web site got changed around. Any chance of us getting to see or at least hear the fabled sound?

Dick-san, Announcements are for me. You can post it in the Events one, and yes, it doesn't have to be strictly Chinese music.
You can post things on the forum calendar, but if it doesn't allow you to, PM me the message and I'll do it for you.
CCC.

As I mentioned (or at least hinted), my two groups who *might* do Folklife this year aren't traditional Chinese ensembles. I''ve been looking to hook up with people to do that with, but so far my Chinese music making has been confined to solo work with books and CDs.
But to answer to Carlos's question, I play sax with Banda Gozona, a group dedicated to promoting Oaxacan festival music and culture. And I am principal flutist with the World Meditation Ensemble, performing sacred music from world cultures and original music. Both these organizations submitted apps to Folklife this year.
Hey Carlos, your video clip is a gas. That must have been one fun party! I notice you appear to be referring to a score during the performance. Can you tell us where you got the arrangements or how they were created?

--------- I have several books of erhu music (and pipa music, for that matter) that I got the duets from. My friend, Zhou Ping, the flute guy, used to do music in college in China, and arranged them for the band. I've found it's fairly easy to arrange Chinese tunes - there are not tricky western harmonies to grapple with. After doing years of bluegrass, folk, and Celtic, the inherent chords are pretty clear and obvious. Between the two of us, also, we have a decent collection of different treatments of many of the trad tunes.
The main instruments play the melodies , additional instruments play fills and harmony lines, and low instruments play drones and basic chord indicator lines. EZ.
For the most part I play from traditional Chinese notation - the numbers thing.
