I could design something new for them to stick on instead of the horse and cart...

Hahaha, I hate the horse and cart, too! I guess that's the symbol of Xi'an's Terra Cotta Warriors. Here is something new: www.chinesezither.net/sbm.htmlTwo dragons in the front side two phenoix in the rear side a Fairly lady Queen on the left frame a Queen dragon on the right frame In my opinion, very "Chinese" look.

Thanks Carol, that is a lovely design! I also like a particular Dunhuang decoration with silver thread.
Best wishes,
David

Quite like this one: It has an ancient structure to it, i.e. a design fitted into a geometric shape.

I'm very particular about images on my guzheng. Hense my dan tranh came with the exact inlay work that I expected and then some. The Vietnamese are superior at inlay work, some of the most delicate and intricate work in the world. Second are the Japanese and then Koreans.
On guzheng I prefer to have the lack of inlay. I rather like the jade and other rock carvings of flowers which are raised off the surface. Flowers make the best inlay art on guzhengs. Or just simple lines like that on the Scarlet Bird guzhengs. Chinese characters are very nice to have but less is better than a lot. Placement is also something to be thought about, characters at the end of the instrument would look elegant and classy if it was just situated in one corner of the other in a nice rectangle or box formation. I like semetrical geometrical images also, swirls paterns and celtic like knotts...
Fine detailed work is something I enjoy most of all. I'm doing a little bit of that on my dan tranh.
Adding to the exsisting inlay work..
