At the time, China was called "Da Qing" (i.e. The Great Qing Empire). They used the first dynasty, the Qin (Ch'in in Wade-Giles), as the name, thus became, Chin-a, China, etc...

"China" called itself under the dynasty which ruled it at the time, e.g. Da Ming, Da Song, Da Han, etc. There was self-referencing to itself using "zhongguo" or "zhongyuan", etc, but rare and often used when you're outside the country, or foreigners refering to China, inside or outside, etc.
Also, this convention exists in Chinese naming of other countries, for example, Great Britain, which can be refered to as Da Ying (i.e. Da Ying Bowuguan, The British Museum), though rare and in formal occasions. Also, Da He (or Yamato) for Japan. Namely countries that have had powerful kings/emperors and/or empires. You can't use it on America of course (Da Mei) as this doesn't apply!

Just something I've been wondering about... Do/can you use a bow with a different kind of hair? Like human hair? I started thinking about this when one of my friends (who has long hair) said she was getting it cut short so I was like hmm.... I wonder if I could make a bow out of it...?

I'm not an expert, but I don't think that human hair would work -- it's way too thin and smooth. But if you do try it, please post. Regards, Paul...

hmm .. the structure is similar on the microscopic level except as you said much finer. There are many more "fingers" per linear inch than horse hair You might even be able to use it without rosin... it would be interesting.
It would probably wear out so fast that it would look like your erhu was shedding. I bet rosin/hair fuzz/etc would make an interesting concoction to clean up.
