If I have this straight in my own head, the score presumes a tuning of A/E rather than G/D. If you need to play in the key of C with the A/E tuning then the key of F is correct using erhu mapping. If you want to tune the erquan erhu to G/D, then play Grassland as if you are playing a D/A erhu in the key of G. Have fun! Best wishes, David Hello I am a beginner erhu student. Need help! If I wanna play a score in c major, do I need to tune my erhu differently like other than D / A? Also, may i get those finger charts too? Thanks

Hi April,
Welcome to the forum. You don't have to do a different tuning to play in C major. Try googling for the fingering charts - the ones I posted on this thread goes back a long time and are not available.
Regards, paul...

Hello I am a beginner erhu student. Need help! If I wanna play a score in c major, do I need to tune my erhu differently like other than D / A? Also, may i get those finger charts too? Thanks There are several answers that depend on the situation. If you have a erhu jianpu (numeric) score indicated in C, you can play it in the written key while tuned to the standard D/A. A fingering chart will help with that. If you don't have to play with a recording or other instruments, you can play it in any key you want, such as D. The setting can make this difficult though, so it depends on the arrangement. Sometimes you can simply tune your erhu to C/G and play as if it were tuned normally. That way, you can play in the familiar D key, while actually sounding in C. I will look for a tuning chart. Best wishes, David

Best wishes, David Yes, and often in Cantonese music some of the bowed strings are tuned C-G, and the gaohu to G-D. For a standard erhu tuned D-A, think of the open strings as 2-6, the notes D and A in the key of C, 1=C.

Here is a pretty good fingering chart for playing in C on erhu: C erhu chartNote the fingering marks that show where to put your fingers. One horizontal line (-) is first finger, two lines (=) is second finger. The box with the upside-down V (sort-of) is the fourth finger or pinky. Best wishes, David

How come I don't able to see those picture? Photobucket used to be useful for uploading images to be linked to from forums like ours, for free. Last year some time I think, Photobucket changed to a paid service. Photobucket images are no longer available on this forum, unless we pay for it. Since images can now be loaded directly to the forum, there is no reason to pay Photobucket to host images. Best wishes, David

**** I've located the original material and updated my first two posts at the beginning of this thread. The pdf files can be downloaded and opened with Adobe Reader (Mac of Win versions). ****
Enjoy.

To make things a little bit easier, I've changed out the pdf downloads to image files.

Thanks so much for sharing these! I'm trying to amass as much information I can as a soon-to-be owner of my first erhu.
