Good Morning, I am an adult Caribbean man who lives in the Bay Area, CA. I came accross the Dizi about a year ago and loved the sound and Chinese music. I found a teacher and have learned to play it. I would like to find other players (adults) that may want to get together and play, to practice and celebrate the beautiful chinese culture and music. Thanks

Hi richbto and welcome.
I'm impressed you like our music and culture. Sorry can't advise you about finding other dizi players since I'm in Europe but a video post on YT would be most welcome.

Welcome to the forum, richbto. I would expect your teacher to be a good resource for hooking up with other musicians. I suggest that you don't limit your search to other dizi players. It is actually even more fun to play Chinese music with the other traditional Chinese instruments, such as guzheng and erhu. I am not plugged into the Bay area scene, but you might check with Chinese cultural organizations, and watch for festivals. In more ordinary times, there are at least two public festivals, for the Autumn Moon and Lunar New Year. In the Bay area, I would expect there to be at least one large ensemble, such as a Chinese orchestra.
Good luck!
Best wishes,
David

Ed Thanks Ed for the welcome. Yep, I heard the dizi for the cirst time about two years ago and I immediately knew I needed to learn about it and Chinese folk music. I have recorded a couple of videos playing solo but dont know how to post them here. Thank you for the comment.

Great suggestions and I will do a little research on the cultural agencies in my area. I also like the idea of playing with other instruments too. My teacher and I meet often and play but he only teaches little children. Im the only adult he teaches and we develop a friendship, but it feels a bit contractual since we meet for paid lessons hence Im looking for others to play together without the formal student teacher arrangement. Thanks for the tip!

Hi Rich, there are music books available with scores and backing tracks. I have one for the hulusi and had one made for me for the xun. They are at least at an intermediate level of difficulty.
I'm curious can you send a link to your YT videos.

You've built up quite a small repertoire. I assume your teacher speaks English, mine doesn't. I get my books from red music shop. The owner also compiled for me scores and backing tracks for the xun. If you haven't already try the hulusi and it's cousin the bawu, they're much easier to play. The hulusi's most well known tune "Phoenix tail bamboo under the moonlight" is not difficult. I'm impressed. Well done.

Im adding them once a month so that I have time to practice and record it, so more recordings to come in the future. My teacher speaks English but he is returning to China with his family likely in 2021 so I will continue my learning by practicing and playing with others. Thanks for the tips on the books. Looking at Red Music now. Take care my friend.
