Wondering how do others warm up yourselves before a performance?
Typically I play long notes and some short practice pieces before my embouchure, throat, hands, and breathing gets "in tune". I know it happens once the transition between low and high octave notes become smooth, and the tone sounds full-bodied and clean.
I recently discovered that this flute tone exercise (see below) works well for Xiao (U and Tang embouchures). in fact, it's easier to do on the Tang Xiao/Shakuhachi because of its wider blowing edge.
The instruction is to vocalize the note and blow simultaneously. There's a kind of odd vibration of the mouth and throat which feels awkward at first but eventually feels rather relaxing. I found that it quickly opens up my throat and therefore gets the tone right quickly. It also helps to remove unwanted throat sounds that sometimes comes up, which I figured is from tension.
Hope this helps others.
