Looks nice. More importantly, does it play well musically?

It plays OK. I finished it 2 days ago so I need to get adjusted. I have a concert comming up, so I did a lot of practicing on my Ren Xiao which is considerably thinner. The lowest note is the hardest to get out; weird sometimes it plays ok, the next moment nothing happens. I guess I have to practice more.

If you can already play shakuhachi then indeed it’s about adjustments, especially detect for air leaking from fingering. I faced this problem moving from narrow to wider bore.

The lowest note is one of the hardest. I have the same problem with my xiao. One day it is easy to play, the next day it is difficult to make a sound. However, I live in area that is cold and dry in winter and hot humid in summer. The drastic temperature change effect the movement of air in the tube. The xiao has to be warm up before playing and the lips have to be adjusted.

The advantage of using resin to fill up the holes is that when you screw up you can refill the hole and start again. This way I was able to place the holes not only in tune but also comfy to play. I noticed that there were a couple of Winson Liao-flutes offered for sale on Ebay. One of them had the holes cut in curve that really falls nicely under the fingers (in particular the right hand). The second octave though is a different story: very hard to get the notes out (on the Ren Xiao it's no problem)

Yes Master Liao has customised such fingering holes specific to the buyer on request, but I guess the subsequent new owner might find it tough to play.
Love his flutes as they are a joy to play, and yet remain challenging because it invites growth. Tang Xiao for me is like endless courtship, each time I get closer to getting a good sound, I notice another weakness in my playing.
