Hi -
I play with a small traditional Chinese Orchestra. I learned flute and piano when I was young. Our daughters were attending Chinese school that offered hulusi and dizi classes so I took both. One of the teachers had started this small orchestra. My husband had learned the da ruan from him and joined the orchestra 9 years ago and I just recently joined.
One day the teacher brought in a bawu for me to try which I really liked. The first one I purchased was a vertical style. It sounded off and seller agreed to send another which seemed much better but could not tune it. We skyped about it and they showed me to tune it by pushing down on the reed part which seemed to work. When we had class it was not tuning and the teacher said to never push down on that. I saw a transverse style on ebay that was purchased from Easons Music Store in China. I thought it would be good but when it arrived it was off in way it played and was able to return it. Probably not best idea to buy used when I don't know how seller took care of it.
I have purchased dizi's from Red Music Store. I am thinking I would like to get the transverse style bawu but am wondering about difference between rosewood, ebony and bamboo and professional vs concert. Main thing is that we will be able to tune it with the rest of the group. I will probably get it in G.
I am also thinking of getting a Dizi in F. I noticed they have name of person who made the dizi listed. Are there makers that are better then others?
I would speak with our teacher but bit difficult as he speaks very little English.
Thanks so much for your help.
