I have this hulusi. I didn't really even know what it was when I bought it, but now I love this instrument. However, it seems like the pipes on this one are not detachable (right? picture attached). Lately sometimes when I play the highest note it's mostly air and not much sound comes out. Is this a reed problem? I assume there's not much I can do about it if the pipes don't detach.

I'm not familiar with hulusi but based on online information, it appears not detachable. The detachable ones are mounted on another piece of material rather than directly on the gourd/body. The info here (in Chinese) says one can still try to detach by using banana oil to dissolve the glue between the bamboo pipes and the gourd. Sounds like a messy job since you've to glue it back on after changing the reed. zhidao.baidu.com/question/435887435.html

View AttachmentDon’t change the reed. Judging by the picture your hulusi is probably a very low quality one just get a new one... the gourd is plastic and the bamboo looks cheap... ok. There’s a lot of them online, but don’t be lazy and go on Amazon or eBay. Eason or redmusicshop is good, as they specialize in Chinese instruments. Bakelite works and is easy to wash, but is usually low end. Check if there is glue near the pipes... if not some hulusis have their pipes in pretty tight, but don’t use brute force. But maybe the glue is inside the instrument so don’t be too quick to try. Shake the instrument. If you hear something loose, maybe you broke the reed by blowing too hard. You need the most air on the lowest note. Besides there should be a sound when you are blowing very lightly. There also could be water or something in there, so the reed can’t vibrate. Or there is rust because of the moisture and the reed snapped or died somehow. Also try blowing a bit harder little by little to check the sound.

if you search taobao, you can find the best hulusi there, prepare to pay around $100 US for the best ones. Persoanlly, I would go for the sideways Bawu or the straight on version, as there are no un-necessary ornaments or drone pipes. There are 10 holed version and 9 holes that play excellent.
