Yes, its very good, in between a U and Tang mouthpiece. But the other thing is that he puts these ring-like grooves inside the xiao, Im not sure what it is, but its definitely really loud and powerful.

Is the ring groove in wood or bamboo xiao? Is it the natural bamboo nodes inside the bamboo that he doesn't file away? From what I read about shakuhachi research the loudness come from large hole at the bottom or large finger hole. Large hole provide more efficient air flow therefore produce louder sound. I would think the groove interfere with the air flow and reduce the sound.

No its completely different and unique to winsons instruments, you should talk to him directly if you are interested and he will surely explain with photos. But the bottom line is that, Song is indeed a good designed mouthpiece.

I don't know what happen, but he doesn't answer my questions or give me any photos. When I last asked to buy a wood xiao he doesn't even respond. Well, it save me a good chunk of money.

Maybe wait a while as he had been traveling to give talks. I recently ordered a bamboo Northern Xiao from him. He was out of on hand stock for G Xiao so had to wait for him to make a new one which took around 2 weeks. I'm guessing quality wood material may be harder to get. Overall I continue to be fascinated by the sound quality: volume, resonance, and ease of play. And I love the simplicity of his products, raw and unadorned. Thus far, it's been straight forward communicating with Master Liao. I tell him what I need, he replies, I choose, he records a video demo, make payment, and he ships.

If you are just starting off, u dont need a winson flute. There are only 2 reasons why you need to buy from Winson. 1) You want the best possible quality as a beginner, as to motivate you. For example, a beginner doesnt need a $5000 silver flute, but if thats what it takes to motivate you, then it can be justified.
2) You are pro-level and have mastered all other xiaos. Personally, I am still intermediate level, and while I have bought Winson flute for motivational purposes, I now realise I have equal or more fun on lower quality instruments. Recently I have come across an Ellis wooden short xiao, and its very good quality for my personal level, and I have many years of playing that before I reach the point where I have 'outgrown' it.
You basically need to be a pro in order to say you 'need' a winson flute. 'Wanting' one is a different story altogether.

I know some pro who don't own Winson flute and still play very well.

I emailed him and asked him what kind of payment he take on March 5. No answer. I don't think because he is busy. He responded to my previous emails quickly, but very short, not much detail.
