Here's another [free] tool besides the tuner and metronome applications I suggested. Record your practice sessions on your computer and playback to analyze your sounds. Yes, I agree that those small microphones are lousy, but they work OK for practicing. I was previously using another audio recording software, Audacity, which is a free, open source program, but when I moved to Win XP Pro, I encountered a problem with trying to export my files to mp3 format -- wav format is just too large. This new, free (basic version) of WavePad is showing a lot of promise. Give it a try and share your thoughts. nch.com.au/wavepad/index.htmlBy the way, I just use a rubber band threaded through the rear grille of my erhu to hold the mic -- keep the volume low! Regards, Paul

I totally agree with the premise of recording ones self when learning an instrument.. Lets you hear what your doing.. Different than hearing when your playing. .
Its one of the best tools you can use to learn.. Even as a pro. Best way to learn a NEW tune.
I don't play any Chinese anything but I have played a few instruments professionally and most pro's that's what they do..
Recorders are cheap.. Even a battery hand held can work ..
