Hi guys,
I've seen some of you mention EcoErhu.com, but was just wondering if anyone has bought from them recently, and what are they like, as I would still like a synthetic skin Erhu for my travelling. I know Eason does a few, but the ones at EcoErhu seem a bit cheaper, but wanted to see if anyone has had recent experience of their quality.
Thanks. H

I'm planning to buy an EcoErhu as well, but I decided to buy from Eason so if someone has some information I'd like to know

If I do buy one from them, I'm tempted to buy their recovered rosewood one. It's only $600, which is quite a nice price for an aged instrument.

I have a synthetic erhu from eason. It's their most budget one and I bought it to take with me whilst working in Mykonos. It's like drinking non-alcoholic beer: tastes similar but ultimately unsatisfying. Curiously my teacher raved at how good the bow is.
If sound quality is important and I've been used to playing my high end erhus, then don't buy one. Only get one if you are planing to cross borders and then buy a cheap one. I can't see the point in getting one with expensive woods if the snake skin is the same as the ones on budget eco erhus.

For me, it's the first ever Erhu I'm going to buy and I prefer the EcoErhu. I want to buy the budget one from Eason and the demo sounds perfectly fine. But thank you for your comment! Edit: But with all that, when I'll be better and will want a high-end Erhu I'll probably buy one with snakeskin. But for me, as a beginner, I'll the fake skin.

Ok, Ok you got me, it does sound good, but why would one want to spend $600 plus postage and tax on one to go travelling with.

I travel quite regularly and have family in different countries, so this will allow me to travel without worry about CITES stuff. With CITES certification, you need it every time the item crosses a border, which is a massive hassle to get. I have family abroad who all play music, so I usually "jam" with them when I go on holiday. Violins don't tend to have CITES problems lol.

Okay, so I decided to take one for the team and ordered an Eco Erhu from www.EcoErhu.com. They're seem to be the same people as at the Bamboo Grove ( orientalmusic.org ). I ordered the Black Sandalwood one which is $299. So far the customer services seem pretty good, and they are quick to respond. Paid via PayPal so there is buyer protection too. Like Sung Wah, there was no suggesting that you should go for the most expensive one, but the person emailing me explained why based on my own explantation of my musical background a particular wood was more suitable. It's just gone 2.30am on Monday 26 March 2018, which is when I placed order and paid. Will give you guys any updates as to delivery times and quality when I get it.

Yeah I saw these, but they don't sound as nice, at least via recording, as the Bamboo Grove's eco Erhus. Have a look at www.ecoerhu.com and the videos which they have on each model's page.

The videos of the Eason synthetic-skin erhu are apparently of the $154 (USD) model. They also have models at $300 and $731. When comparing with the EcoErhu models, it makes best sense to consider the options at the same price level. I could not find videos of the better Eason models, but in the past Sung Wah has been very accommodating of requests.
It is often hard to compare sound recordings made with different equipment in a different location. I think the value of videos is comparing instruments with each other where the same recording equipment is used.
I have not played synthetic skin erhus from either Eason or EcoErhu, and have no opinion on either.
Best wishes,
David

EcoErhu does their cheapest version for $99 but even that, via recording, sounds better than Eason's $154 one. Although having said that, it's not necessarily a fair comparison due to differences in recording equipment etc.
I intend to also buy one from Eason so I can give you guys a comparison. Since I bought a $300 from EcoErhu, I'll buy the $300 from Eason too and let you guys know what it's like when I get around to it.

That'll be helpful for me I feel like the 99 EcoErhu sounds better because 1. Recording, Sung Wah seemed to be using cheap equipment back when this was recorded (possibly the camera audio) 2. Sung Wah has a big collection of instruments, and he, unlike EcoErhu is selling a lot of other things. EcoErhu have, well, eco Erhus. They rely on selling those Erhus while Sung Wah doesn't need to "prove" anything.

Hi..
If you read the 'fine' print you will see that one is supposed to contact and apply for a Cites for every country that you are going to go to in advance of going.. I was shocked when I found that out... Some countries don't bother with it but it also suggest if going any country anywhere check with them on their Cites stuff if they bother or not..
Anyway just bit of info..
