Hi everyone, I just got my new PROFESSIONAL BEIJING ERHU BOW BY LI HUAI GANG and PIRASTRO OLIV ROSIN EVAH OLIV EVAH a few days ago from Eason Music Store....with a few more others stuffs like 4300 yrs old bridge and etc(accessories recommend on his video). My question is, how do we know enough is enough when applying rosin on a new bow. Why I ask this question? Coz been applying rosin more than 10 times on my new bow and yet when I am bowing, there are some parts with no sound or funny sound. Use back my old bow, no problem. Ok, how I rosin my new bow(correct me if I am wrong), here is how I did it:- Grab my rosin block and scratch it to bring rosin powder to the top. Scratch the rosin by using a nail file on the surface of the rosin. Tightened up my new bow and start putting rosin on the bow hair both side...inch by inch at a time. Did I miss anything? Been doing it 10 time and yet still the same....arhhhhh.... Anyone can share their thought with me on this......

When I worked in repair shops, we would get new bows of all sorts to work by crushing a bit of rosin to make a powder, putting the powder in paper, and rubbing the powdered rosin on the bow,
Shake off the excess and your bow will work a lot better faster.

It takes me about 60 to 70 strokes per side to rosin a new bow adequately, so 10 is not nearly enough. In any case, I apply rosin until the bow works well. My teacher did not recommend using crushed rosin since it is hard to get it fine enough. Probably with some experience it will work well, since Dawei reported good results.
Best wishes,
David

Best wishes, David Indeed, you do have to get the rosin crushed very fine to get a good powder. I would use heavy paper and fold it over the rosin and crush the rosin with a heavy object. Then I would remove any larger pieces and have a good rosin powder. Other than that, 60-80 strokes with the rosin per bow side should do the trick.
