Is a $7,000 erhu worth the price? There are a lot of wonderful options for much less than that. Maybe it is worth the cost for an advanced player who loves that particular erhu. I can't imagine ordering such a thing sight-unseen or unplayed. If you are in that price range, I suggest going to China to make a selection. Sometimes the best possible instrument for you is not the most expensive.
Eason Music lists a $5,000 erhu by TKM that can be ordered. Sounds like they are not kept in stock though. What to do?! I suppose if you have $7,000 burning a hole in your pocket, a high-end erhu is more worthy than some other ways of spending it. That's not a lot of money for some Western instruments, by the way.
I have a recurring fantasy that some rich music lover will hear me play and offer to buy me the (Western) flute of my dreams. Someone did give me a very fine dan bau (Vietnamese monochord) recently after hearing me at a gig. Too bad Warren Buffet doesn't play Chinese music.
It would be a shame to buy a wonderful instrument and then not play the h**l out of it.
Best wishes,
David

Yes $7000 plus for an erhu its consider very expensive. And what you said its what my teacher told me as well, there are others erhu that is cheaper and better. I have no plan of getting it since I already had a zitan erhu which less than 1/2 of this. I just thought of posting here to share about this famous maker and his erhu. And see if anyone here heard about this maker or own one of his erhu. This erhu sound louder and brighter than mine. And the tone is better as well. I guess one of the main reason for that price is because his is one of the famous erhu maker and he had hand-made it. Of course compare to a violin, erhu is still very cheap. As good violin can easily cost $10-20k where else a good erhu cost around $3000-5000

Yes, very tempted as well to get from one of the famed makers. But do be careful. I have heard of sellers in China faking Indian zita with African zitan. Think African one is less than half the price of Indian's

Think African one is less than half the price of Indian's Yes that why its very important to get from a reliable seller such as Eason or ask your teacher to get it for you. Too bad my teacher said I dont need it for now.hahahaha If you really intent to get one better get it within these 1-2 years. If you notice the past 5 years erhu price had gone up by 20-30% Mainly due to China currency, labor cost, raw material and demand as well. I believe in the next 10 years,Indian zitan erhu would easily cost US$6000-8000. Currently a Dunhaung 12A Indian zitan erhu is around US$3700
