I hope I can even hold up an erhu at that age! I didn't even think of that aspect! That man must really love the erhu, more than I even suspected. But maybe our instruments hold us up at that age, if ya know what I mean? It's just a piece of wood with some snakeskin, but it means so much more to me.

No doubt the younger you are the easier and faster you learn. But age is not the limit. My teacher is 76 and yet he still play very well. And one of my classmate is in her early 80 and she doing her diploma in erhu this year. Plus most of my classmate due to family and work commitment started learn at their late 50.

Eugene, its very true that for a young player it is easier to learn. But an instrument is a lifelong friend! I remember I used to feel behind everyone else in the violin because I didn't start at such a young age like 4. But it doesn't upset me so much anymore. If you truly love your instrument, anyone can feel that, whether you started at 4 or 74. It's truly touching to see moments like that.

Totally agree Eugene. I learn erhu when I was in school. Stopped for 30 years. Always thought I could pick it up during my retirement years. Then, one friend came over and mishandled my erhu, so, I took it to one of the school/shop to repair. While there, talked with the teachers who convinced me to start taking lessons again. Glad that I did. Found that things don't come naturally this time round due to my age. Glad that I did not leave it to older age. It would be a lot harder!

It must have been majorly fun to play erhu in school! Do you think erhu is offered in schools across china as an instrument to learn, or is it just in music specialised schools?

I am quite sure they do in China. In Singapore, a lot of schools here have Chinese orchestra. They even have competitions among schools to determine rankings. Some parents even get their kids to do extra tuition to go for erhu examinations so that the kids can enroll into good schools.
